Stories
Last Weeks meeting
What a great turnout this week - plenty of members and guests

Chaired by Bob Lambert - he provided us with 2 thoughts for the day

Mark Twain Quote: Never put off till tomorrow what may be done day after tomorrow just as well.

And another (one only Bob would come up with maybe?)
Image result for when a woman says what it's not because

He's a brave man that Bob!

A warm welcome to our guests on the night

Pat Little and Karin Simpson have been with us often lately and its good to see them
Irena Bauer returned for the night and brought a friend Egle Prasc
and friends of Elizabeth including Justine Goldsmith, Clair Prosser and Justine Paragreen

On to matters in the interest of Rotary
From the Pres - Rotary Camberwell will be having their annual Arts Show again this year - dates are June 24th to 28th - there will be more details later
  • Lili-Ann gave kudos to Helen and the organisers for the "Guess who's coming to Lunch" on Sunday. It has been a long time since we last had one of those - Here is a short blurb by Rob after lunch at the Simpsons

For those members who unfortunately missed last Sunday’s GUESS WHO’S COMING TO LUNCH event, you missed a wonderful afternoon.

We had three hosts, the Wightmans, Shepherds and the Simpsons.

Great feedback with everyone having a great time with a superb range of gourmet food, especially sourced by our previous member, and Past President, David Robinson.

Special Thanks should go to Terry Wightman, Elizabeth Shepherd and Karin Simpson for going to a great deal of trouble in arranging the hosting of the event.

Also, special thanks to Helen Hartnett and Pat Little for hosting the pre-lunch drinks and nibbles, including Elizabeth’s delicious sausage rolls.

The general feedback was that we will have to do this again soon. Hope to see the rest of you there at the next event.

  • Rob reminded those attending that the meeting on May13th is at Canterbury Community Centre where we will hear about the work they do from Tracy Martin, who is the Manager of the centre. A note has subsequently come out from Rob who requires confirmation of attendance. This is a self catered event so exact numbers are important. If you are attending let him know by Friday please. Oh and by the way it will cost $20per head
  • Additionally, in connection with the centre they will be hosting an open event on Saturday May 18th from 10.30am to 12.30pm - Our club will be providing a bbq and, whilst Rob was looking for volunteers to assist, it seems from the show of hands on Monday night that he will have that covered
Tony thanked those amongst the club who have sponsored him on his May50k walk for MS. At the time of writing he had received sponsorship from Ant, Cathie, Alan and John McC and his total was $1163 out of an original target of $1000. Needless to say that target will be adjusted - it would be good to reach perhaps $1500 so of you are open to supporting this cause for any amount here is the link to his page

Also, at the time of writing he had completed 51.1km of his target of 100km (another target which needs to be adjusted it seems) - thats over a period of 8 days (with 1 days break)

Finally, we say a sad farewell to Ted and Rosemary Waghorne as they venture off to their life in Ballarat - Lake Wendouree to be more precise. Almost 10 years with our club and many more in Rotary - they won't be lost to Rotary that's for sure and I, for one, look forward to staying in touch and popping in for a visit.

Last weeks Speaker - Jill Forsyth
Thanks to Anne for this weeks story

WHAT HAS JILL FORSYTH BEEN UP TO?

Tonight's speaker, Jill Forsyth, is the quinessential Rotarian, who has initiated some of the best known projects in the world of Rotary in District 9800 and beyond. She never stops creating new projects, and tonight, she informed us all about her current areas of interest.

On a trip to Darwin, she discovered that the dental health of remote communities is extremely inadequate. In our daily lives, in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, it is easy to manage our dental issues. This is not the case for indigenous people in the Northern Territory. The only real option for dental treatment is to extract teeth from the mouth. Jill described that fact that there were not many smiles and many members of the indigenous community have dentures.

The other area in which Jill has devised projects is in Timor Leste. In this particular Rotary project, a job creation scheme was devised which provides income for food for families and enables students to remain at school to undertake post-compulsory education.

Through a presentation in the Rotary Club of Balwyn, she encountered Dr Martin Hall, the state Chief Oral Health Advisor for Dental Health Services in Victoria. He and Sally Vong ( from Timor Leste) have assisted children with chronic pain who are unable to eat properly. They also train dental professionals in the Northern Territory. Through the implementation of preventative dental care, children's oral health has been improved.

Finally, Jill highlighted the following elements:-
1. Cultural learnings in all aspects of life - through the court system and the police force
2. the plight of indigenous children - who often roam the streets
3. the focus of women in indigenous communities - with particular reference to the fashion industry and art.
So many solutions were offered to ameliorate the way of life of indigenous people. It is now up to the clusters of Rotary Clubs to join together to participate in these projects.

Here's Jill receiving her certificate of appreciation and our hugely expensive pen!

Kudos to RC Canterbury and FORaMEAL
So the other day I saw that we had been tagged in a post on Facebook - more specifically FORaMEAL was tagged. Whilst you may have differing views of the situation on the Ukraine you cannot deny that people there need help. Actually, it reminded me that PDG Dennis Shore made the comment that Rotary Clubs on both sides of that conflict are working to help their communities which is what we do!.

Anyway I thought I would show the post that mentioned us - see below

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations' Ukraine Crisis Appeal is excited to share that Ukraine Crisis Appeal aid container #2 was locked and loaded and ready for sailing on 10 May.
💪🏻 Full of 100,000 dehydrated meal kits, once again donated by For a MEAL - each packet feeds 5 people - you do the maths!
🙏🏻 Let’s not forget the mobile ventilators, donated by Queensland Health and Cabrini Health Australia, dental chairs, x-ray equipment and full instrumentation to help establish maxillo-facial surgery, treating horrific facial wounds.
❤️ Then there are loads of wheelchairs and walkers, hundreds of beautiful knitted kids’ packs donated by Pat Mills, tonnes of assorted medical aid, resuscitation training dummies, patient hoists, cranio-facial instruments, a surgical microscope, new Bonds clothing, an autoclave and so much more.
Everything in this load was donated - we already have pallets coming for our next container - please consider helping us fund the transport to Ukraine. All donations to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal are tax deductible and all our items are delivered to L’viv Rotary Club Ukraine Unity for distribution. Teamwork makes the dream work!
