Matters in the interest of Rotary

Steve W spoke of "coffee with a cop" on June 18th - details below

*****  We have an urgent request for a late change to market duty this weekend - Roger will be undergoing surgery and cannot make it - can anyone jump in and help?

Ross put out a call - he has an acquaintance who has a stack of school books which need to find a new home

Rob reminded all that changeover is July 1st at Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre and we are limited for space so get in early

Thanks to Steve Wylie for this sage piece of "advice"

A Rotarian’s Version of Facebook

For those of our generation who do not and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom.

I will give them pictures of my family, my dog and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day I will also listen to their conversations, and give them ‘thumbs up’ and tell them I ‘like ‘them.

And it works just like Facebook. Already have four people following me, two police offices, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.

Lastly and NB - No meeting next week with Kings Birthday weekend - see you back at Bass Care on the 17th where hard hitting journo Tony L will "grill" the Pres for the member behind the badge!!

HYPNOTHERAPY by Anne Josefsberg

First off - What is hypnotherapy?
  • A natural, altered state of consciousness
  • A relaxed hyper suggestible state or dissociated state
Putting it plainly - it has been described as guided daydreaming

To understand what hypnosis is and what going into trance is, you really have to appreciate what a pleasurable experience it can be. For those, like me, who undertake self-help online sessions of self-hypnosis and trance, it is very easy to deal with it.

New York Timers described hypnosis as " the epitome of mind body medicine. It can enable the mind to tell the body how to react and modify the messages that the body sends to the mind"

Tony Nguyen, formerly a client of Olivia Walford, is a strong supporter of the work that she does. She is ranked one of the top three clinical hypnotherapists in Melbourne and she has a passion for her craft smile demonstrating her positive nature. She deals with people of all ages, from four to eighty-four, for a wide range of reasons including
  • Stress and anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Negative beliefs
  • Phobias
  • IBS
  • Addictions
  • Insomnia
  • Pain Relief
  • Performance management

Hypnosis is a natural altered state of consciousness. It happens ins a similar way to when you zone out or drift off. the goal of a successul hypnotherapy session is to enter a state which is between Theta and Delta state. Olivia noted that when she speaks in a hypnotherapy session, it is not her normal voice. It is slower and far more relaxed. She also uses music in the background to relax her clients.

THREE WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS AND ANXIETY: -
1. Breathing Technique- resetting the central nervous system. Deep breathing in, low exhale out of mouth.
2. Havening- a soothing technique developed in Mexico. Bilateral stimulation of both hemispheres of the brain. Hug, rub down both arms (right and left).
3. Brain Spotting Technique - focus on the spoon or pen ONLY. for a few seconds. Refocus on everything else around the room. Repeat the procedure three times. Occular Cardiac Response - slows the heart rate. Releases all the "feel good " hormones.

How effective is hypnotherapy? - these results published by the American Health Magazine

Psychoanalysis - 38% recovered after 600 sessions
Behaviour Therapy - 72% recovered after 22 sessions
Hypnotherapy - 93% recovered after just 6 sessions

We all emerged with a very positive and open view of clinical hypnotherapy and could envision how it could be used to improve our daily lives in many respects. It was a very useful meeting for all of us.
