Thanks to John B for chairing the evening. Interesting to spot a lot of Hawthorn scarves in the room - might that have something to do with our location and demographic??

A Note from the President August 21st 2024

It was lovely to see the room full at our meeting this week! I think it had something to do with
the guest speaker, David Parkin, coming to talk about all things AFL. Guests and members
alike dressed in their favourite footy colours making the room very colourful. I trust there will
be a similar turnout next week for Michael Stillwell, partner of Jillian Woinarski, when he
comes to tell us all about his role as our Local Community Leader. Michael comes to the role
with vast experience in Rotary, including as an Assistant Governor, and as a mentor for
small business owners, so we have much to gain from working with him.

FORaMEAL has been going great guns this month, with another packing event at
Camberwell Grammar today . What a powerhouse Nora, Doug and the team
have been!

Sunday Market volunteers have been having better weather lately and this Sunday looks like
being lovely-I’ll really enjoy my shift chatting to locals and visitors. Lili-Ann’s story last week
on the Market was spot on.

The RIMERN team just get on with it, though they will miss Rob Simpson while he is
overseas.

Thank you, John Braine, for taking on attendance and meeting organization duties in Rob’s
absence. Remember to let JB know by the previous Thursday if your aren’t coming to the
next meeting, or the names of any guests.

A huge thank you to David Chivers for taking on the lead for Wear the Wattle, an important
source of revenue for the club. He will be calling on people to become involved, but don’t
wait to offer to help in reinvigorating this important project.

I’m very pleased that my ‘pink bin’ recycling has developed a following. Thank you to those
who each week bring and donate their 10c recycling bottle and cans. I may have to expand
to a bigger container!

A wonderful thing about this club is that people who take on jobs are so motivated and
beaver away at their roles. More stories and about these activities would be great to share,
so please send these to Tony Laycock. Look out for the interview with me, your pres ,when I
was interviewed live last Friday night on the Rotary and Community Services Radio Show.
Tony will put it on the club website soon.

Last weeks Speaker - David Parkin - all things Footy
PRESENTING DAVID PARKIN, TOP BLOKE by Anne Josefsberg

David Parkin is an icon in the world of AFL. Only one of two individuals who have both captained and coached their football team, he is currently a commentator on Fox Network. He is passionate about raising funds for research into prostate cancer, particularly for rural and regional areas. He was an advocate for the Quit campaign and for the maintenance of physical education in primary and secondary schools in Victoria.

Footballers according to Parkin, are not prepared for life after football. While in the Carlton Football Club, he appointed Laurie Fabian in a fulltime capacity, to deal with player welfare. He praised the Geelong Football Club for having four full time, dedicated player welfare officers, who deal with personal development programs. The goal is for AFL players to have a balanced approach to their professional lives as football players.

The issue of concussion needs to be addressed, due to the density of the modern style football game. This means that the AFL players should be involved in some type of feedback with their football clubs. The ensuing court cases will resolve some of these issues.

Question time dealt with a variety of topics - AFLW, transition to a "normal" daily way of life, and online gambling. It was refreshingly honest and direct of David to openly state what has been know for a long time- the AFL is up to its neck in gambling and supports the revenue that comes from it. Furthermore, gambling underwrites everything.

David Parkin is the real thing. What you see is what you get- about the AFL, support for the players and about the deleterious effects of gambling on sport. He is the rare combination of an all-round sports person and someone who has gone far beyond his life in the world of sport. He is, indeed, a top bloke!

Next weeks speaker - Michael Stillwell - The role of Community Leader
As many of you know Michael is the partner of our own Jill and he has taken on the role of Regional Community Leader for the clubs in our community.

He's coming along this coming Monday to talk to us about this role - he has asked for a whiteboard (typical consultant!)

Here is his official photo and bio

Michael Stillwell - FAICD is an experienced Independent Company Director with a fifty-
year background in the fields of Family Business, Automotive Retail, International Aviation
and Information Technology.

the transition and growth of the Stillwell Family business following the death of family

and the recruitment of a non-family Chief Executive Officer Michael retired early in 2009
