Last Week's Meeting - Monday 9 November 2020

Some of the matters raised at last Monday's meeting included:

  • Bill Granger has organised a visit to Gippsland next Monday to transport plants to distribute to members of the community
  • Anne Brown advised that a District grant has been approved which will be used along with matching Club funds to support students at Kew High School
  • Steve Wylie asked members to contact Bob Lambert to assist him with the delivery of the welcome packs to new Boroondara residents.

Last Week's Speaker - Margaret Zita

Margaret Zita, CEO of My Room, joined us to speak about the amazing work of the organisation.

My Room was started 28 years ago with three founding members with children in hospital cancer wards.

The organisation has grown and grown and has raised in excess of $28 m used for supporting families, medication, accommodation expenses and medical equipment.

Also significantly the donations have been used to funds social workers, physiotherapists and dietitians  and also clinical trials of emerging medication.

Margaret mentioned the great support provided to My Room by ambassadors who have helped with fund raising and support for the children.

As a follow up, Margaret has provided the My Room Prospectus for those that may be interested in learning more about My Room. The link for the prospectus is:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/jux8klsq3xtn0nb/MY%20ROOM%202020%20PROSPECTUS.pdf?dl=0

Margaret has also provided the link to Oscar's story from our the My Room Telethon a couple of weeks ago and another story from one of the other father’s, Maurice, that was not on the Telethon, but equally as important after he lost his son Adam to this hideous disease.

Your Garden - Our Future Event Thursday 26 November at 7 pm

On Thursday 26 November at 7 pm the Rotarians for Bees are holding a major event.

Last year around the same time the R4B's held a fantastic event, with great speakers, a sumptuous meal, greats raffles and the list goes on.

This year some of these elements will be missing due to the restrictions around numbers being able to gather in a venue.

But the event, which will be held as a Zoom webinar, will still have a great vibe with the topic being Your Garden - Our Future.

The speakers are Costa Georgiadis, the host of Gardening Australia and Fiona Chambers, the CEO of the Wheen Bee Foundation and they will be discussing how to create a pollinator friendly habitat for your balcony, urban garden or rural environment.

Registration for the event can be made at this TryBooking link;  https://www.trybooking.com/BMIAB

You will need, prior to the event, to have installed/uploaded the Zoom app on you computer, table or mobile to view the webinar.

Admission to the webinar is free. However, please consider making a donation by clicking on the Admission with Donation ticket option. The suggested donation amount has been set at $15 and you may choose to make one donation of $15 or multiple donations of $15 by inserting 1, 2, 3 etc in the number of tickets box.

All donations received, which would be gratefully appreciated, will be used towards the Rotarians for Bees' contribution to the Victorian Schools Gardening Project.

There also will be a raffle drawn on the night of the event. Every individual who registers will have one ticket in the raffle. A donation of $15 will entitle the person who registers to have an additional ticket and each further donation of $15 will entitle the person to one extra raffle ticket for each $15 donation.

The raffle prizes include one nights accommodation at the Beechworth Honey Hive apartment, Beechworth Honey sampler hampers valued at $100 containing a selection of honey and other products, Seasol hamper packs valued at $100 and Beechworth Honey sampler packs of ten honeys valued at $30.

Looking forward to you joining the webinar event on 26 November.

 Cabrini Health Foundation Appeal

Due to COVID-19 in Melbourne, there is an urgent need at Cabrini Health to refurbish the rooms from four bed wards into single bed wards, each with an en-suite.

Cabrini Foundation would like to invite Rotary members to support the refurbishment of Cabrini Malvern Hospital. This urgent refurbishment would allow Cabrini Health to reconfigure and improve the existing patient rooms to ensure only single beds plus en-suites are available.

Current and future patients of Cabrini Health will greatly benefit from their safe and secure environment alongside the very best doctors and staff.

All donations are welcome and will be very much appreciated.  For any donations over $25,000, Cabrini would like to offer naming rights in the room and their support will be acknowledged on our honour board in the
Malvern Hospital foyer.

Please refer to the attached flier on the link below for further detail.
