Message from the Pres

What an inspiring presenter we had this week in Rev Natalie Dixon -Monu! Stay tuned for opportunities to help collect Items to go into the 650 Christmas hampers, or to pack the hampers, which BCO provide to the many individuals and families they support. See later for Anne’s report on Natalie’s talk.

As my email to you all explained, due to cost increases at BASScare, we will trial buffet style meal service in order to keep the price increase to a minimum. However we will eventually need to find a new venue for meetings as the building we meet in will be demolished and redeveloped sometime next year. Members of the board are already searching for a new venue. If you have any ideas for venues, or questions about the changes please contact Rob Simpson or myself.

Last weeks recycling resulted in$10 for RC Canterbury. Keep those bottles and cans coming in.

As we finish End Polio Month, I have made it to just over 200km walked and Tony has walked 125km (a measly effort but considering he came back ill from the mission there is an excuse - The Ed). I have knowledge of the long-term effects of Polio as my uncle had it, so I am dedicated to support its eradication. I think many people assume polio is gone from the world because it is far less visible these days, much like measles (hence the decline in vaccination rates and the subsequent decrease in herd immunity), but if you get it, it’s devastating! Please support the End Polio and Walk with Us campaigns with your donations. Unfortunately, the donations have been relatively sparse - only $356 to date for the whole team. Last day today so if you have a couple of bob to spare here is the link again - https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/st/153/1021

Enjoy the long weekend, then be back on November 11 to learn some Tai Chi from Tony L - remember loose clothing and comfortable shoes. Put Nov 18 in your calendar to be sure you come to hear all about the most recent Philippines Medical Mission. STOP PRESS, as of yesterday evening and with many members and guests unable to make it the date for the presentation by the Philippines mission team has been moved to November 25th.

What else was mentioned in the Matters In the Interest of Rotary

  • Cathie put out a call for RIMERN volunteers and has followed this up with an email. Please make sure you let her know your availability as she is set to prepare the roster for next year
  • Tony, on behalf of John, put out a call for a volunteer for a 3 hour shift this coming Sunday as we had a member advise on availability - thanks to the Pres for putting her hand up - the roster is included below
  • John spoke about the change to meals at BASScare - also covered by the Pres above
Riddle me this??

Which of our members has the dubious honour of losing their golf ball before they had even teed off on the first hole? A certain member was removing his bag ready to put it on the buggy when their ball fell out and rolled under a nearby bush never to be seen again

Lastly a reminder - no meeting next week...
Last Week Speaker - Natalie Dixon-Monu - Boroondara Community Outreach
Report from Anne

COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION
You have meeting nights when the speaker comes and lights up the room. Tonight was one of them. Natalie Dixon-Manu, from the Boroondara Community Outreach is what one would call a "goer". She has it all in spades.

She explained the iterations of the background history of providing services to people with mental illness and those who had experienced institutionalisation in a very perceptive and clear manner. Her language is direct and forceful and she gets to the point very quickly.

In her mind, she (BCO) is not a service provider. She is one of the members of her community and she is building bonds with all the individuals in that community, whether it be through food, food preparation and distribution or the deliverance of emergency needs. Being so hypercritical of what NDIS has caused makes her talk extremely compelling. She understands who she is helping, and she makes no difference in the way she helps them. Her understanding of the complexities of navigating government systems, using only local council and other philanthropic resources, is absolutely mind blowing. Some specific examples include the distribution of packs of non-perishable food (supported and provided by our club through FORaMEAL by police undertaking welfare checks in the Boroondara zone and the partnership with the YMCA to enable individuals to use shower facilities and have toiletry bags to make them feel dignified.

The other aspect of the presentation demonstrated the way Natalie connects teenagers in the preparation of frozen meals and fresh meals, to move the members of her community closer to the world outside. It seemed obvious to her, from her observations, that many of the men in her community often feel disconnected with male teenagers, something which many of us would be totally unaware of . In guiding students from Trinity College and MLC, to cook meals and prepare them for use and distribution, she has managed to reach her goals in the best way possible.

It is very hard to forget Natalie, due to her outgoing and passionate manner, and due to the fact that she works very hard to find a way to develop a solution which is both imaginative and highly effective. We live in a cynical world, at times, and to have someone like her express boldly and decisively what she seeks to achieve and does so, is very refreshing.
We all had a fabulous time and Natalie further opened our minds to the other side of Boroondara which is not often discussed. I am very glad that we were all able to have this very deep and meaningful conversation.
