Last Week's Meeting - Harmony Day

We joined together to celebrate Harmony Day last Monday and it was terrific to formally induct Hans Carlborg as our newest member. Hans is a long time rotarian and joins Canterbury Rotary Club with the aim of being closely involved with the Club's youth projects. Congratulations Hans and we look forward to many years with you involved with projects and the fun of the Club.

Some members went the extra step on Harmony Day and came attired in the dress of their homeland or where their heritage is linked. Bill Granger, pictured below, advised us that he has Irish links and, as well as looking the part, told some great jokes.

There were a number of matters raised by members:

Val showed a presentation which highlighted the steps being taken to develop the FORaMEAL program. These steps include:
  • working with Swinburne University students to create videos which will assist in training for FORaMEAL events
  • developing production kits for smaller packing events including Covid safe procedures
  • developing a focus on future events involving schools and local councils and preparing a promotional video to assist with these events

Cathie then took to the stage to MC our trivia quiz.

It was great fun and many thanks to Lili-Ann who put the questions together.

Cathie also got into the spirit of Harmony Day by decking herself out as true aussie.

And finally, Ted spoke about the Lucas Mill which has been purchased in part with funds from the Club to assist with the milling of fallen timber in the Gippsland area.

The response to this project has been immense, with the local Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs and community farmers now working towards a second Mill. The team has been out to visit over 40 farms with an estimate of 300 logs to mill, and currently employing four workers. The potential to duplicate into NSW is been investigated and challenged, a simple idea that has community helping community.
