Stories
Last weeks meeting
Good to see another good turnout as we took our weekly meeting to a different venue. Thanks to our host on the night Tracy Martin Manager of the centre

Guests included Pat Little, Karin Simpson and Jenny Simpson, widow of Tony Simpson who was a charter member of the club. All were heartily received.

Our Chair for the night was Elizabeth who provided us with this quote from Ronald Reagan

Image result for “By working together, pooling resources and building on our strengths, we can accomplish great things.” Ronald Reagan

Matters in the interest of Rotary

Tony L. commented on the recent forum at Swinburne where he and Hans attended as part of the mentoring program. There were over 300 students attending the Swinburne forum and we had a good opportunity as a club to show our program

Rob reminded us of the BBQ at the community centre this coming Saturday - he was looking for more volunteers within the 2 hour window

Doug advised that we had been approached by Jama Farah of RC Footscray who was sending a further container to Ethiopia. He requested 100,000 meals to be part of that shipment.
Doug commented that he had that in stock along with another 200,000 meals which he intended to ship to the Philippines. That should take care of the stock on hand so time to do some more packing!

Helen reminded us of the tunnel tour this coming Monday. Meet under the clocks at Flinders Street. NB there is no meeting next week due to the social gathering in the morning

I have to retract something which I posted in the bulletin a few weeks back. I posted the following after our presentation by Peter Brukner.  Mistakenly during my notetaking I wrote the following

4 things
  • Get healthy
  • have a low fat diet
  • exercise regularly
  • get his blood glucose down to normal levels
Obviously, Peter was more in favour of a Low Carb High Fat diet (which I also stated)

Finally, its almost that time of year again... Yes, changeover is coming. Help us celebrate Tony's year and welcome Elizabeth to take over the reins

Last Week Speaker - Tracy Martin
Thanks Anne for the story

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE MOVEMENT

A neighbourhood house creates a space where people feel safe and are part of something. The Manager, Tracey Martin, understands what people need and the essential purpose of the Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre. The two essential goals - 1. to create a community 2 to banish social isolation. Being an independent incorporated association running a neighbourhood house requires dedication, patience and commitment.

This particular neighbourhood house began its life with a small group of women in the local Baptist Church. Nowadays, the neighbourhood house is one of six hundred and is a thriving organization.
It was a wonderful idea to have the meeting of The Rotary Club of Canterbury at the Canterbury Neighbourhood House. We all learned about the way the network started and how it evolved. We also began to comprehend the range of age groups, activities and cultural groups who attend and participate in the range of programs.

As Rotarians, we have a basic view of helping other people and empowering them to become more skilled and knowledgeable about what Rotary can achieve. In the same way, the Neighbourhood Centres/ Houses give individuals, for a reasonably small fee, an opportunity to become part of a community, to become involved in what it is all about.

If you want to come to a free event, on Saturday 18th May, between 10.30am and 12.30pm, at 2 Kendall Street, Canterbury, VIC, 3126, to enjoy the Open Day for the new Canterbury Community Precinct. There will be activities, food, entertainment and fun for everyone.

Anecdotally - the neighbourhood community centres do a lot of things similar to what Rotary does - albeit on a daily basis. It was heartwarming to see the passion that Tracy has for this venture (the Ed.)

Escape to the Chateau - Val and Patrick style
Thanks Val, for the update on progress with the Chateau (ok maison) in France. I think the members will enjoy your story and pictures so keep them coming

Patrick and Nicole were a welcome sight at the end after 30 hours of travel.  An early dinner and off to bed.

I would like to tell you that the house was wonderful, but I would be lying. It has been renamed “The Dust House”.   In the last 7 weeks the whole house has been rewired and a significant amount of plumbing done…. And through stone walls that amounts to “messy”. Patrick has also been pointing and treating the exposed interior limestone walls; a massive task requiring painstaking precision and perseverance.  Add to that the exposed beams which also needed extensive work but look so good!!  So poor boy has been hard at it.

They all look fantastic, but the layers of thick dust spread right through the house was phenomenal.   I sound like an ungrateful bitch as I know he has worked solidly, but the dust was depressing so my gratitude for all his hard work was less than it should have been. I was overwhelmed.

After a good nights sleep, the energy returned and the clean up began.

No more extension leads everywhere and the garden looks splendid. The garden is coming to life after a very wet Winter; our lovely rose is in full bloom and the problem trees from last year have sprung into life.

Tomorrow is the annual Cavalcade (equivalent to our Moomba). It passes right by our door and is a real treat.   The carnival also comes to town for this weekend so we are treated to “thud thud” carnival music till 11pm… but the dodgem cars are just around the corner. Such joy!!  Not.

Here are the first 4 weeks of the new cycle. It seems our volunteer numbers for the market are dwindling and this puts pressure on others - please make sure to make yourself available for a session
