Last Week's Speaker - Dr Cally Berryman

Dr Cally Berryman picture above with her partner Alan and Bill Granger  is the author of a new book, The Accidental Gambler which sheds light on the dark world of female problem gambling and how women often use gambling to deal with grief, trauma and unresolved issues.

Gamblers have a pre-occupation with gambling. Some escape from problems, boredom, loneliness or anxiety and depression. Cally indicated that this is especially important for women. She also advised that problem gambling indicates an altered brain - it is a mind problem. The brain wants a big burst of dopamines again and again and this forces the person to gamble again and again.

Cally outlined the stages of change to get out of being a gambler. She mentioned help contacts, financial counselling services, gambling blocking software and described treatment options. Unfortunately  suicide  can be prevalent for gamblers.

She  described an interesting facial recognition software that is available at Crown Casino. It relies on the gambler to pre-registering themself and their image.

Cally provided a very interesting insight into gambling and especially its impact on women.
Next Week's Speaker - Andrew Campbell

Andrew Campbell is an Audiologist and is a leader in hearing health care and certified in audiological sciences. He is a speaker, teacher, manager, philanthropist and innovator. He was a founding member of one of the largest hearing health care groups in the country, the founder of Campbell Cosmetic Hearing, Neuaudio – Hearing & Brain Health the Gain Hearing Network, an organisation dedicated to supporting independent private practices in Australia.

He is a member of the Australian College of Audiology. Furthermore, Andrew has been recognized multiple times as a leader in industry, integrity and entrepreneurship for his work in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the USA.

Restoring Hope Golf Day

Restoring Hope is a Melbourne based charity that helps young people who have been sexually abused.  They are holding a fund raising golf day at the RACV Golf Club in Healsville on the 10 November.

The mission at Restoring Hope is to distribute Crisis Care Packs and Comfort Care Packs to young people who have been abused.  Typically a child would receive these items at a police station or trauma hospital.  The Packs provide new clothes (necessary for when the police remove clothing for forensic testing), toiletries, a blanket, a colouring book, pencils and a “Hope” teddy bear. The aim is to use this simple act to bring some comfort and a sense of normality to a life that has been turned upside down, and restore a sense of dignity and hope at a time when it is needed most. The details about the golf day and how to book are at the Restoring Hope  website at:  http://restoringhope.org.au/
