Stories
Last weeks meeting
Thought for the day - thanks David Shave (and Doctor Google to let me find the whole quote!!)

Courtesy of Albert Einstein

Common sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down in the mind before you reach eighteen

Thats deep!!

Thanks Pres Edda for the opening comments

  • Steve and Ant will be away next Monday at thew Sports For All information night. If you remember we had the pleasure of seeing and listening to a very interesting presentation on the worthwhile work this organisation does for disadvantaged children by getting them into sports.  Looking forward to the feedback after this meeting
  • The Rotary Op shop in Kew is looking for volunteers to help out on a couple of days a week. The point of contact is Jill Forsyth and if you want her details speak to the Pres
  • D9800 is sponsoring 5 Rotarians under the age of 40 to attend Ricon. - do we know anyone who deserves this support?
Matters in the Interest of Rotary

  • John B advised that there was confusion regarding the Pizza night sheet filled in last week so he asked everyone present to redo it
  • Ted confirmed the ESRAG event which will happen around RICON - details below on the bulletin
  • Bob gave us a great pay it forward message on this recent trip to the supermarket - what goes around comes around Bob so well played
  • Bob also advised that the next round of Playground removals (or partial in some cases) in Boroondara is to occur in March. The responsibility lies with ourselves and RC Hatwthorn and Bob will be looking for up to 10 volunteers, details to follow
  • David Z reminded everyone of the lunch (which was yesterday March 1st) the details were incorrect in the weekly menu card - it was Box Hill RSL not Golf Club. Hope you read the last bulletin and went to the right place!! :)
  • Ant gave feedback from his month of contact on the welfare committee. Turns out Rob S is recovering slowly. In face I spoke to him today and he has said (fingers crossed) only another 4 weeks in a boot! Ross is not that good so thoughts be with him.

Last Weeks Speaker - Ken Maher - member behind the badge

What an interesting, insightful presentation by Ken. Listening to him and sitting next to Ant I got the sense that there were some distinct similarities in their journey so far (Police and Financial Advising)

Heres the report from Anne

INTERESTING TIMES WITH KEN MAHER - MEMBER BEHIND THE BADGE

A DISCIPLINED BACKGROUND

Ken Maher, born in Tamworth, NSW, was very keen on the Cadets at Christian Brothers College. He joined the NSW Police Cadets at age seventeen and a half and signed up at nineteen. His first posting was a Darlinghurst, Third Division, where he experienced Saturday nights where, among other interesting occurrences they had 2 cells - one for those who could afford bail and one for those who could not. Leaving the NSW Police in 1970, he became a pilot officer, with special duties and administration. He enjoyed Thirty - Four Squadron, during which he experience special events and visiting VIPs.

A LIFE IN A COUNCIL

For a short period of time, Ken became part of Sunshine Council, in which he undertook administrative services. In that council, just prior to amalgamations, individuals look and aimed to be strategic leaders.

THE CORPORATE WORLD

Moving from Sunshine Council, became a consultant in Financial Services for nearly thirteen years. In his own business (Moneta Super), as well as a Lecturer at Victoria University.

MY LIFE AS A ROTARIAN

Ken wrote a wonderful history of The Rotary Club of Yarra Bend, was Treasurer for five years, Bulletin Editor and then President between the years 2017 and 2018. (Our editor tried to offer him the role but he refused!!)

A CREATIVE LIFE

Ken is renowned for his beautiful wooden (ahem timber Anne!!) items. He is a member of a woodworking club and uses red iron bark and grey iron box at different times and for different shapes. Many of the logs came from our very own, David Shave.

GETTING THE FAMILY TOGETHER IS REALLY HARD

With his extended family in many different locations, Ken proudly displayed a photo of Christmas 2022, where all his children, spouses and grandchildren were present. A fastidious man with an eye for detail and a sense of humour at the ready, he once again proved that every member of The Rotary Club of Canterbury has a story to tell.
Next weeks meeting - a social occasion Pizza and Trivia
Yes it is the long awaited (and advertised) Pizza and Trviai night

Rob and Lili-Ann have organised the food and Lili-Ann promises an interesting set of questions...

Recycle Regatta

The Rotary Club of Brighton North has a forthcoming event
AND

They have a big GOAL.

The aim is to provide a

TEEN MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

to every secondary student in Victoria.

To facilitate this program they are organising an event named the

and

THEY ARE CHALLENGING EVERYR CLUB TO ENTER THE EVENT TO SEE WHICH CLUB'S BOAT STAYS AFLOAT THE LONGEST.

Alternatively members may just wish to support this worthy cause by way of a donation.

Any support by way of advertising in your newsletters, email distribution or social media platforms would be appreciated.
Tree planting and clean up Australia
A recent presenter to the club Graham Ross has provided some information on a Clean Up Australia Day event run by his organisation (March 5th) as well as a n upcoming tree planting event run by Whitehorse Council

Here is the link to the cleanup event

A national tree day planting event again at Gardiners Creek, closer to the golf course.
You can see the area in yellow in the map below:

Looking to plant approx. 4,000 plants during a planting event on National Tree Day. We will be starting to prepare the site soon, and you will see some signage and then dry grass when it has been sprayed.
Organised by the council
