Last Weeks Meeting
Cathie was chair for the evening with Tony L as acting Pres for the night

and the thought for the day courtesy of Maya Angelou who was was an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist

Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud. - Quote by Maya Angelou ...

Not much to report from the Pres - who wasn't there so no surprise really :)

Tony L asked if anyone was interesting in providing content for our website - it is a large task to change stories and keep things up to date - hopefully making the website more attractive so anything community focussed would be greatly appreciated. Also, any articles for our Facebook page

Matters in the Interest of Rotary
  • We had a packing event yesterday at Scotch College
  • Note on Bass Care from JB - they are planning on a large scale change program including venue changes. Our challenge is the reduced attendance recently and how this cannot keep the option of the Canterbury Centre viable for our meetings. The board is considering options.
You will see in the body of the bulletin that next month is the Rotary Walk to End Polio campaign. D9800 has always been a champion in raising funds for this cause. A page has been crated for our club so why not join the team and get some fundraising going as well as getting healthier at same time.

Just Tony and Elizabeth in there currently so plenty of space for more. If you don't want to join then perhaps pick a member and donate to them.  Tony will make sure he keeps up his steps in the Philippines.

Speaking of which - the mission takes off on October 5th and the bulk of the members (not the golfers) will return on the 16th. Plenty of stories to be shared there!  Good to see we have 2 past mission members in Rachele Stin and Stinoj Shaju. We have a small dynamic group this year so Doug may find it easier to manage (less cat herding going on!)

And the big news on the night was the induction of a new member - Welcome Geoff Ballard - you had almost as many guest appearances RCC as I did! And a warm welcome to his wife Margaret.

Geoff was introduced to the club by Val

Last Weeks Speaker - Chris Knight - Connecting Communities
Thanks to Chris Knight for his presentation on the relief efforts he is doing for the people of Shepparton after flooding in 2022 and 2024.

Notes from Anne

THE FLOOD ASSISTANCE PROJECT WORKS
Tonight's presentation about "Connecting Communities Australia" demonstrates what works, and how well it works. This organization and Chris Knight's involvement began during COVID. He came to search to volunteer involvement in disaster recovery (in bushfires, droughts and other occurrences).

Chris scoped out the project in Shepparton and surrounds due to the fact that many residents are still feeling the pain, which covers many aspects, which can also deal with mental wellness issues. Specifically, the "Make Safe" program disconnects power and gas. Often, flood damage to property has many sequences - firstly, to let the frame of the residence dry out and secondly, to undertake mould treatment after the property dries out. Interestingly, the devastation caused by floods was not equally felt as someohouses in the same street suffered but others didn't (brings back memories of the fires in Sydney back in 1994 where houses were taken out in the suburb and the one next door was untouched).

Whilst they are still struggling with the results of the floods the residents in this zone are thankful that someone out there has agreed to offer a hand of help. The goal for Chris is to obtain at least fifteen volunteers to undertake a flood relief project in Shepparton. Many of the volunteers in "Connecting Communities Australia" are ex-Qantas employees. Chris opened up to us and outlined what is not only a practical project, but an extremely thoughtful one.

What is being implemented warms the hearts and mind of those in need.

Next Weeks Speaker - Stephen Marantelli - The American electoral system
How the US Electoral College Works, Stephen E Marantelli
Stephen E Marantelli is a Melbourne-based barrister, speaker and author. His historical book Three Brothers: When George Washington and Edmund Barton Sat Down To Dinner – is a witty behind-the-scenes peek into the rough and tumble world of nation building as told by the first captains of the American and Australian Ships of State. Stephen has a passion for America history, in particular the history of the presidency.

Talk outline
This year's US presidential election is guaranteed to be as rancorous as the last. And remember all the post-election acrimony in 2016 about Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, but Donald Trump winning the Electoral College vote?  So, how do Americans elect their president?  Why did they invent this crazy Electoral College system and why do they still use it?  Is there any way to reform it?

Stephen Marantelli,

FORaMEAL Happenings for the Month of September 2024

A big welcome return to our bubbly and bright, Val. She readily slotted in to assisting with our two successful packing events this month.

On the September 10, we conducted an event at Strathcona, Tay Greggan where 100 girls packed 28,500 meals.

And yesterday, the September 25 we were at Scotch College at Hawthorn where 60 boys packed 23,000 meals.

Manpower has been light on this month due to other commitments of some of the usual team. A big thank you is extended to the stalwarts Ant, Neil, David, Kate, Marg from Port Phillip Rotary who consistently give their time and energy to ensure the smooth running of the events. We will certainly welcome back the travellers for the November and December events.

This means that for the first quarter of the Rotary Year for 2024 a grand total of 127,300 meals have been packed. Doug has been kept very busy with the international bureaucracy and the ever-ending paperwork for our shipment to the Philippines. 100,000 meals were distributed locally to Foodbank

We often receive acknowledgement from the leaders of the schools we visit and I include a copy of the latest one received from Jen Buchanan, Head of Tay Creggan Victoria for distributions by their front- line charity partners to help feed and meet the nutritional needs of many facing financial difficulties due to the current cost of living increases.

Dear Val, Nora, Marg and all the Rotary Team!

I want to express our sincere gratitude for the time, energy, and enthusiasm that your team brought to our Year 9 students. The commitment and passion from all the volunteers were truly inspiring, and it created such a positive and uplifting atmosphere for everyone involved.

We've received countless comments from students and staff alike, with many students describing it as their "best day" at school. There was a tangible buzz of excitement and engagement throughout the school, and the 'hum' of energy that filled the hallways was simply infectious.

Your efforts have created a memorable experience that our students this year and for sure they will cherish their “FORaMEAL” day at TC for years to come. We are already looking forward to doing this again next year and continuing this wonderful partnership.

Thank you once again for everything you’ve done to make the day such a success!

Warm regards,

Jen

Also, our volunteers from Pennant Melbourne who participated in the event at Camberwell Grammar School on August 22 have included a website Case Study and a LinkedIn Post. Again, great publicity for our project.

Making a Difference, One Meal at a Time.

FORaMEAL, a project by the Rotary Club of Canterbury, provides emergency meals to those affected by natural and other disasters. Each year, they distribute meals free of charge to vulnerable individuals and families worldwide.

During the Stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne, they redirected part of their FORaMEAL efforts to support the most vulnerable locals, providing over 200,000 meals. In June 2024, an additional 110,000 meals were provided to Food Bank Victoria for distribution by their front-line charity partners to those facing financial difficulties due to the current cost of living increases.

On August 22, 2024, a Pennant Melbourne team of four decided to lend a helping hand, and use of their two days volunteering leave to support FORaMEal. Colleagues arrived at Camberwell Grammar School at 2:00 PM to set up production lines. Each line included lentils, oats, rice, and sachets of essential vitamins and minerals. Their task was to fill the packs, weigh and heat seal them, and then box them up. Each pack provides a balanced and nutritious meal for 5-6 people! By 3:00 PM, several production lines were in full swing, and by 6:00 PM, the truck was loaded with over 20,000 meals.

One of our Pennant colleagues, Pamala Knyvett shared, “This was an amazing opportunity to help those in need, and I am looking forward to being involved again. I really enjoyed being part of this activity and appreciated how much could be achieved when everybody works together. Sharing this experience with my Melbourne colleagues was also very special.”

Together, we can make a difference!
