Well, there you go. Another year has gone by and we welcome our new President Elizabeth (who henceforth will be known as Pres Elizabeth!) A great celebration of the year of PP Tony who ably led the club and supported us in our projects and challenges. I thought I would find a quote on change but they all seemed to reflect that this was needed. Far from the truth. Changeover in a Rotary sense is a continuation of the great work that comes from those before us. The theme for the night was the many colours of Rotary and good to see the effort made by some of the 64 attendees. These attendees included the following guests Jonathan Shepherd and members of Pres Elizabeths family Newly appointed DG Michael Lapina and his son Alex outgoing AG Charles Tran Michael Stillwell - incoming RCL for our community Amelia Hamer - Liberal party candidate for the seat of Kooyong Cr. Lisa Hollingsworth - Mayor of Boroondara George De Souza - President of sister club Camberwell and his wife Fulvia Russell Jones outgoing President of sister club Balwyn Doug's (and PE Tony's) friend Neil Hollingsworth and Eugene Fitzwilliam (both members of last years medical mission as well) various partners and wives of members (hope I haven't forgotten anyone!) All in all a great night of good food, fellowship and celebration Before we add on photos for the night Pres Elizabeth has provided her thoughts not only on our Changeover but also on the District Changeover from the previous day Well, a lot can happen in a week! In Changover season (mid June to Mid July) Rotarians can, and many do, attend lots of celebrations of the achievements of clubs right around our district. At the District Changeover on Sunday John McCaskill, Liz McCaskill, Tony Laycock, Jonathan Shepherd and I were there to see how the big wigs put on an event, but really to farewell District Governor, Ron Payne, and welcome the new DG Michael Lapina. The best part of the day was when Tony was asked to come forward to receive a PHF recognition! Hugely deserved. See photos taken from the cheap seats at the back, table 24 of 26 tables. Another exciting moment was when DGE, Peter Shepheard, asked Jonathan Shepherd (my husband and no relation to Peter) to be the MC for next year’s District Changeover! The event concluded with a wonderful rendition of the song, “One Day More”, from the musical, “ Les Miserables”, sung by Michael Lapina, his equally talented family and the three opera singers who had entertained us earlier. The very next day many of the same people joined us at the Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre to help Canterbury celebrate the end of one year, with the accompanying achievements, and the start of the new Rotary year, full of hopes and dreams. During the proceedings of a fabulous, typical Canterbury night, Two PHF recognitions were presented by newly minted DG, Michael Lapina. The first PHF was presented to John Braine (3 sapphires) and the second PHF was presented to Tony Laycock-from none to two PHFs in less than 24 hours! It must be some kind of a record! Actually, it happened to Nora Ley in 2023 when she was recognised at the District Changeover one day then by our club at the Changeover the next day. Rob Simpson was humbled to receive the Ralph Hartnett Memorial Cup as Rotarian of the Year. Congratulations to John B, Tony L, Rob S and Tony Nguyen & Tran for their outstanding year. What a powerhouse of people of action, we have at RC Canterbury! Please see Anne’s article for more information and pictures about the night and those who worked so hard to put it together. While Nora is taking a break from MC duties and FAM, to help with lambing at home in Tallangatta, the rest of us back here have plenty to do in Rotary. Check your rosters for your Sunday Market Duty - I look forward to seeing Kyle, Rob A and Cathie there this Sunday. I’ll be wearing my thermals! The RIMERN roster is out for the rest of the year. If you can’t make your day, please organise a swap with someone. In case of a problem on the day let Rob S know- he doesn’t want to keep the truck waiting for someone who isn’t coming. Since it is school holidays, enjoy the break because you’ll be back into it from July 27th. If you haven’t been to a FORaMEAL foodpacking event and you’d like to help and discover the Magic for yourself-contact Nora so she can put you on the list. You may not be able to help out every time, but the FAM team need many hands and sometimes extra pairs of hands-yours! Finally, do you read and keep handy the Table notice which our Rotarian of the Year, Rob Simpson, takes some time and effort to put together to keep us informed of the upcoming meal, great speakers organised by Jill and upcoming events like FAM. What about the Bulletin? This year we will be working to improve the look, content and appeal for Rotarians and non-Rotarians. If you have ideas or content/photos contact Tony L and offer your time and help. The new Board will have its first meeting at 8pm following the dinner meeting. Jill has organised a very topical speaker, on a subject close to John P’s heart so be sure to be there-“with bells on” (no, that’s for July 29th-stay tuned)! Is that a photo of a future Rotarian? On the subject of the new board here they are.
