Last Week's Your Garden - Our Future Webinar

On Thursday 26 November there was a terrific Rotarians for Bees webinar titled Your Garden - Our Future. Over 200 people registered for the webinar.

With great video clips including Sir David Attenborough, enthralling sound tracks and the presenters being Costa Georgiadis, ABC Gardening Australian presenter, Fiona Chambers, CEO of the Wheen Bee Foundation, recently re-elected Mayor of the City of Melbourne Sally Capp  and Aris Peteratos  from the Victorian Apiarist Association and member of the Rotarians for Bees Committee we were treated to a fantastic and informative evening.

Many thanks to the Rotarians for Bees organising committee and of course the presenters and all those who joined the webinar to make it such as great event.

Below is a list of the lucky raffle prize winners:

In other Club news there have been discussions with Bass Care regarding our return to the centre. It seems that we will be allowed up to 39 people in the room under the latest easing of restrictions.

We are looking for your response regarding perhaps having one face to face meeting with  a meal on Monday 7 December  before we finish with our xmas gathering in the Riversdale Gardens on 13 December for the holidays. Depending on responses we can then make a formal decision and let everyone know asap. If we do return to Basscare we will need to ensure that our speaker on the night will be able to attend but we will work on this  if we have enough positive responses to make it happen. Please send an email by Monday 30 November to Tony at tony.laycock@canterburyrotary.org with your advice about attending/returning on 7 December to Basscare.

Also please remember that the Club's Annual Meeting is being held  this Monday 30 November at 6.30 pm as a prelude to the usual Club meeting.

Next Week's Speaker - Karyn Sobels

Our speaker next week is Karyn Sobels who was elected President of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (formerly VECCI) in November 2019, following three years as Deputy President and is the first woman to hold that office in the 169 year history of the business group.

Karyn has almost 40 years’ experience in the Retail, Telecommunications and Banking sectors.

Karyn is a Director of publishing company Riskinfo in both Australia and New Zealand, a Director of the Telstra Licensee Association, and Principal of business advisors SKS Hub. Karyn also serves on the Board of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and chairs that organisations’ Economics and Industry Committee.

As a business owner and Chair of Victorian Chamber’s Small Business Taskforce, she has a significant appreciation for the challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs.

Born in South Australia, Karyn has lived in Camberwell for almost 30 years and is now happily classed as a Victorian, having raised 2 children, 2 dogs, a cat and a half decent garden here.

Rotaract was Karyn’s first foray into community contribution, having just missed out being a foundation member of the Rotaract Club of Burnside in 1981 as she was too young by just a month. Her many years of involvement with Rotaract included board positions as well as the RYLA experience and a Rotaract Japanese exchange. Eventually though, she had to leave the Rotary family as in those days, women were not allowed to join Rotary. As an enduring bonus though, she also met her husband at Rotaract.

Karyn holds a BA, a Masters in Commercial Law and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

 Cabrini Health Foundation Appeal

Due to COVID-19 in Melbourne, there is an urgent need at Cabrini Health to refurbish the rooms from four bed wards into single bed wards, each with an en-suite.

Cabrini Foundation would like to invite Rotary members to support the refurbishment of Cabrini Malvern Hospital. This urgent refurbishment would allow Cabrini Health to reconfigure and improve the existing patient rooms to ensure only single beds plus en-suites are available.

Current and future patients of Cabrini Health will greatly benefit from their safe and secure environment alongside the very best doctors and staff.

All donations are welcome and will be very much appreciated.  For any donations over $25,000, Cabrini would like to offer naming rights in the room and their support will be acknowledged on our honour board in the
Malvern Hospital foyer.

Please refer to the attached flier on the link below for further detail.
