MATTERS IN THE INTEREST OF ROTARY
Elizabeth Shepherd has sent The Rotary Club of Canterbury photos of her trip and the adventures of the Rotary Bear. Photos from Mount Fuji, and areas in and near Tokyo. (NB you can see some of those in the bulletin)

Next week we have the visit of our DG Michael Lapina. It is always interesting to hear from the DG on their perception of the year to date, what's happening in the district and the current topic - what's happening in Regionalisation so please make every effort to get there.

Also, an early heads up. Some will be aware (and others will be shocked) that, On November 11th, Tony L will be giving a short presentation on Tai Chi, origins and benefits. Additionally he will take us through a short set of movements. The heads up is to advise that everyone should wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes on the night!

Last Weeks Speaker - David Dobney - Ambassador for St Judes
Thanks Anne for the report

FIGHTING POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION

Never a truer word was spoken in the motto which St Jude abides by. David Dobney, an ambassador for St Jude's, enthusiastically advocated for the marvels taking place at many levels in this educational institution. With one thousand eight hundred students over three campuses and covering three levels of the provision of education ( at primary, secondary and post-compulsory levels), St Jude's is a shining example of how poverty can be overcome in Tanzania.

Beginning with an entrance examination at primary level, building towards quality secondary education and implementing Beyond St Jude's education overseas, Gemma Price-Sisia has coordinated a dynamic, inclusive and educational program. It is a total package.

The structure of the funding for St Jude's is tight. Money to fund the schools and educational programs is sent to NAB in Kew, Victoria , Australia. St Jude's also has many private donors- other agencies and philanthropic organizations. Twenty- four percent of the budget is for unsupported students. Fifteen percent is for infrastructure and four percent is for Rotaract, Interact and EarlyAct. In terms of the delivery of Beyond St Jude's, universities in the USA and UK offer free scholarships for international students. This is the way university students from St Jude's pursue post-compulsory education. St Jude's reminds us that giving an educational experience to impoverished students does not mean that the quality of the program needs to be compromised, nor does the individual student need to be given any slack for the material poverty they live with. St Jude's wants to develop professionals and this is exactly what they achieve. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Report on the medical mission - an abridged version
Don't let anyone tell you the mission is a breeze.  Hot and humid in the Philippines especially closer to the equator in the Negros Occidental province makes it a relatively tough gig for those 5 days we spent screening the local population - had to keep rehydrating

Day 1 - Saturday October 5th off to Manila on a very early flight so lots of weary faces turning up at around 4am
Day 2 - Sunday October 6th flight to Bacolod on Negros Occidental - the location of our first mission 25 years ago and the HQ of the Eye Hear Foundation, quick lunch with the EHF team and then off to our base for the next 4 nights - Zaycoland hotel and resort (almost) in Kabankalan. Pleasant accommodation and a good place to base out of.

Day 3 - Start of the mission screening - split into teams of 8 and 7 we went to our various locations to see the kids and adults first stop for the ear team was Cauayan Central Elementary school whilst the eyes folk went off to the local community hall
Over the following 4 days we had screenings across the province at towns such as Ilog (means river in Tagalog), Hinoba-An and Sipalay. Sometimes in the same location but mostly split between schools and community centres

The Army accompanied the eye team and provided free haircuts to the locals - Some of our team enjoyed their services. Some who needed the services didn't take advantage - ahem no names mentioned!!
And some even took part in the opportunity to chop down some sugar cane. For those unaware the island is the home of sugar crops and as you drive through it you just see vast expanses of cane fields...

Lastly and importantly - the numbers.

Doug will no doubt talk about this on the 18th when the students provide their report on their take aways from the mission but just wanted to update that the total screenings during the 5 days of the mission was 4658. a stellar effort by such a small team!
FORaMEAL - what's been happening
No matter which side of this conflict you have an opinion on the fact remains that people are suffering and need our help.  To this end we have delivered more emergency food relief and thanks to Lili-Ann for putting together this image for our social media and the bulletin
