Stories
Last Week's Combined Meeting - Victor Perton

What makes you optimistic?

That was one of the issues discussed by Victor Perton from the Centre for Optimism (what a great name) at our combined Club  meeting on Wednesday where the Camberwell Rotary Club were our hosts and did it in fine style.

Victor gave us a bubbly and inspiring presentation that included many thought provoking ideas like:
  • the leader is the person you see in the mirror
  • surround yourself with optimists
  • what makes you optimistic
  • optimism is the belief that good things will happen and all will work out in the end
  • health is a major optimistic issue but optimism itself is a key trait in extending health
  • optimists sleep better, more sleep makes you more optimistic
  • if you have an optimistic partner this rubs off on you
  • every great leader is  realistically optimistic
  • it is hard for a pessimistic person to be innovative. Shit happens, just keep going
  • the number one habit for an optimist is to smile
  • my best self - what will I look like in fives years time. This approach will assist in making you more optimistic
  • laugh like an optimist!
Victor suggested that instead of asking you acquaintances "how are you?" and receiving a "good or not bad reply", instead ask "what has been the best thing in your day" and you are likely to receive a much more positive response.

Victor certainly exhibited an air of optimism and was able to enthuse the audience with the same feeling and make for a terrific presentation.

Next Week's Speaker - Alex Josefsberg

Alex Josefsberg, wife of Club member Anne, is joining us at short notice for which we are very appreciative to speak about his journey from USSR to Australia.

Alex has had a varied career which has included university teaching and will surely have a very interesting story to relate to us.

Lucas Mill Update

Bernie Farquhar has been in contact with an update on the Lucas Mill which the Club provided assistance to purchase to help the clean-up after the 2020 fires in Gippsland.

Bernie advised that the milling project has been a real challenge starting a complete organization from scratch that has to meet Government funding criteria and complying with environmental policies  but to see the product produced and the letters that are being received from farmers is amazing and rewarding.

There are now two mills operating, two Toyota 4wd with purpose built trailers equipped with every tool rope and chain imaginable and 4 great guys loving their training and certificates in Forestry and mill operations.

District 9800 Change-over
We know you are all well aware of the ongoing situation in Melbourne with the Covid restrictions on numbers attending functions and would appreciate that this has made planning for the District Changeover a little challenging.

We want this function to be a celebration of the very different year we have just had and a chance to look forward to the next Rotary year with as many people as possible in attendance.

Hence the District Changeover has been moved to Saturday 10 July.  Same details, same venue, same time.

Thank you to everyone who has already booked.  If you are unable to attend on this new date please contact Jane Pennington (jane.pennington@rotary9800.org)  to arrange a refund.

If you have not yet booked, please do so and come and celebrate with your Rotary colleagues.  It will be “first in best dressed” for tickets as we are unsure what the restrictions will allow by then.  The invitation is attached with booking details.

If you have questions please contact Jane.

We both look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful celebration.
