Last weeks meeting
Back at Bass Care again and a warm welcome to our guests on the night
Betty Chetcuti - our speaker
Steve Clark

In keeping with the theme of the speaker Jill came up with this weeks thought for the day

This was particularly apt when we heard from Betty later on

Rob S took chair for the night in the absence of the Pres
Matters in the interest of Rotary
  • Elizabeth gave us feedback from the recent District Assembly held in Melton and gave particular focus to the message from Rotary International President elect Stephanie Urchick. This message was about peace
    • not only world peace (which would be a good outcome) but also about peace within oneself, helping people belong and performing small acts of kindness
  • Also, about making the club experience irresistible
  • Hans provided a report on his recent participation in a judging panel for MBA students at Deakin University
  • Doug told us about a previous attendee to the missions to the Philippines. This generous benefactor provided a donation of $16,000 to each of our projects in that country
  • Rob made mention of the recent sausage sizzle at the Community Centre and how it was a huge success with the last snag being sold at closing time - the effort raised $550
  • Bob added to this by commenting on how good it looked with the club members dressed in their Rotary PPE
This week we have a journal update from Val. Great progress going on at Escape to the Chateau St Gengoux

Last weeks speaker - Betty Chetcuti - a Vegan life
Thanks Anne

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

So, the saying goes.

Tonight, we heard from Betty Chetcuti, a psychologist and author of "My Vegan Cookbook". The main focus of her presentation revolved around what you put in your mouth being very important. Obviously this sounds logical and it is but the focus here being on changes to your diet making changes to your overall health. She recounted the way Aunt Dulcie (the Aunt of Dr Andrew Davies wife Claire) who had been suffering from a progressively debilitating heart condition. This took the form of at least 5 angina attacks daily. Whilst her physician had said that she had all the medical support she could get Aunt Dulcie decided to try a 100% plant-based diet. After 6 months on this diet, she had reduced her angina attacks to 1-2 - NOT a day but actually over that whole period - happening in the initial days and then they had simply vanished.

What was highlighted was the essential feature that one needs to concentrate on what you are going to cook. In fact, certain moments to change the trajectory of your life, and you need to change the course of your nutrition in order to improve your health. Betty chose to listen to her clients and what they were saying, what foods they were eating and suggested a temporary redirection in what they put in their mouth. She gave them a gentle hint that some food items could be swapped out, that they change what they selected to eat and cook and prepare for three days only.

Another aspect which Betty discussed was the level of stress which led and does lead to problems in health. Thus, change what you put in your mouth and you potentially can change your health.
Furthermore, you are the driver of your life, and the choices you make. You have to be happy with whatever you do. Finally, you do not need to accept the genetic profile of the health problems of your family.

Addendum by the Ed. As someone who is unlikely to become a vegetarian never mind a vegan there are some very interesting recipes in Betty's book which I bought, and I am definitely willing to try eating plant based perhaps once or twice a week.  Can't hurt!

Escape to the Chateau update - St Gengoux
Thanks to Val for the latest update.

It has been a very busy and eventful few weeks. The weather has improved immensely and Summer is on its way. Warm and sunny one day, chilly the next.

In warm sunshine last week at the market in Cluny with Michael and Mariella and granddaughter, we came across a stand selling great umbrellas and I was able to buy one with horses for a horse loving grandniece, Amelie. Next day it was back to woolly jumpers.

The dust continues but to a far lesser extent, the wading pool shower is in its last few days. This partly due to the fact that the plumbers have not been able to install gas hot water and appliances. It transpired that, even though we had received gas bills, we in fact had no gas connection. Explain that?? It seems that it went to the wrong address. Viva la France.

This is all set to be rectified this week and so bathroom one should be able to be fitted. At the same time Patrick has come up with a method of replacing wading pool with large shower base so that we just MIGHT have two bathrooms by the end of next week. Just in time for visitors.

John, brother from WA, arrives tomorrow, then various Rotary friends over the next few weeks, followed by my brother, Jim at the end of June. So,the tourist season is upon us in a big way. Got to get those bathrooms in.

Now on to the good news. We now have a wonderful whiz bang kitchen, complete with brand new top of the range appliances, pots and pans and every utensil known me to man. Michael never does things by half. Kitchen design and fit out was totally at Michael’s direction. We would not have invested so much in it, but we knew it was important to him. But also because we knew he would do a fantastic job. Wise choice; it is just great. Halley Avenue kitchen will seem so small.

Once we moved out of the kitchen from centuries past, we did a massive cleanup and took loads of old bits to our favourite charity shop and some to the tip.

The yellow monster was not ours. Phillip is coming again this week to take another load. Such a relief to get rid of some dust ravished crud.

We then took another load to our favourite charity shop and, with only 5 minutes before closing time, we did a quick reconnaissance, and I spied a great framed print of Van Gogh’s “Blue Irises” which now proudly hangs in our bedroom. A bargain at €25. The chairs were from a previous visit, but at Euro 40 each, we were really pleased. So, we are getting there.

So we haven’t had any adventures. just lots and lots of hard work and progress. Michael and Nick were with us this week so there was lots of scrubbing, painting, planning, eating out and some other jobs allocated by Patrick in between. I do lunches and mopping floors (my permanent occupation these days). . The kitchen cupboards and drawers have been rearranged and the technical stuff sorted. ! We are exhausted. We worked really hard together and achieved heaps. The ground floor is now all set, apart from a few items to be reupholstered and a long couch which will have to wait till the end of the year. Everything has either been purchased at a brocante, charity shop or repurposed furniture that was in the house. So we have been very environmentally responsible … or maybe just cheapskates.

As we celebrated last night, we recalled that this time last year it looked like this. So there was much to be pleased about.

Our spanking new kitchen is a treat, with a whole tree trunk exposed beam … Instead of the makeshift old kitchen with no hot water, ancient appliances and c..p furniture. I won’t miss it. I just LOVE our new kitchen.

Patrick has worked miracles and Michael and Nick have been wonderfully supportive. We have worked so well as a team. We were all willing to bend to meet each other’s needs and wants. But I can’t say I would like to do it again.

Thanks Val, those changes look great
